Help needed for cooked puppy food recipe?

I would like to feed my 14 week old Cocker Spaniel puppy home made cooked dog food. Please can someone offer me advise on what the best recipe would be - chicken based - or point me to a reputable online resource.

Thank you.Help needed for cooked puppy food recipe?
A good quality commercial dog food is a far better alternative, at least at this stage of your dog's life. Growing pups need a well balanced diet (particularly with regard to things like protein and energy quality %26amp; quantity, and calcium:phosphorus ratios). Homemade diets can be a great thing, but the majority of the time they are poorly researched and can have serious consequences for the animal, especially when you're talking about a growing puppy. I would strongly advise keeping your puppy on a commercial dog food, at least until he/she reaches maturity.

If your concern is related more to giving your dog some variety in his/her diet, it is easy to keep your dog on a dry food diet but substitute a small amount with meat (or a raw bone)/rice/vegetables/etc.

If you are serious about feeding a homemade diet, you need to do your research very, very thoroughly and really should have the input of your veterinarian. Before you can even think about preparing a diet yourself, you need to have at least a basic understanding of a dog's nutritional requirements. I don't know of any online resources, but you may want to consider looking for a veterinary nutrition book online- one I'd recommend is the pocket companion to Small Animal Clinical Nutrition. This has a lot of material that the average pet owner will never need, but is relatively inexpensice, gives a very good overview of nutrition and does include recipies for homemade diets. I've just had a quick look on Amazon- they're about US$30 new, but you can get one for less than US$10 second hand.

I hope that helps.Help needed for cooked puppy food recipe?
Check out this free cooking E-book, it might have what you're looking for.
Well turkey is very lean (more so than chicken) so i would try a google search for that. I do think that commercial brands aren't as reputable as the appear, even if a vet who is a trained professional says so. There may be equal parts of vitamins which is great, but all that other crap they add to it kind of cancels the good parts out. You can find numerous of recipes using google that have very balanced nutrition factors for your dog and if done properly, homemade dog food is 100% better than commercial grade food.

However, I suggest you do alot of background checking to make sure you know what you are doing although this route may be healthy, it isn't healthy if you won't know 'how much of what' a dog needs. Good luck
well my dogs Bubbles and Abbey-Rose love Steamed chicken fillets and vegies and rice with a honey and soy sauce
Many year ago I had the same question. My vet gave an answer which has always stayed with me. Dog food companies have spent millions of dolllars researching the nutritional requirements of dogs. Modern commercial dog food (puppy food) contains all of the ingredients, vitamins, etc, and in the correct amounts/ratios for optimal puppy growth/health. Why would you want to change that? Maybe what you should be looking to make is a homemade additive to make the food more palatable for the puppy. One which will not change the basic food values of the commercial dog food. For my own dog, as a palatable supplement, I add a little bit of whatever the family is having for dinner that day. That way, her diet changes somewhat each day and she does not get bored with her meals. AND, she gets to eat she she smells cooking !
I highly recommend Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy R. Schultze. It is a quick and easy read with a few recipe guidelines. (Even if you don't follow everything in it, it is a wonderful guide to what to look for in ingredients. I ended up discovering Wysong because of the information in the book and I recommend the brand to just about everyone.)

Many well meaning pet owners switch to home made with out doing much research. What they don't realize is that with out the right balance they depriving their pets. Either figure out what herbs or vitamins to add or get a supplement product like what this site sells. http://www.knowbetterdogfood.com/

Remember to never feed cooked bones as their structure makes them splinter.

Sorry that I don't have any recipes or recipe links for you. I too pretty much do the thing of adding a bit of whatever we're having for dinner (only giving the meat, veggies, or fruit though.)
I feed my dogs a homemade mixture with some Canadae and some Merrick kibble thrown in. My home made mixture contains...

2 x-tra large liver cookie bones crushed up

1 raw egg

2 tablespoons of peanut butter

2-8 sardines (as much as i really want for a shiny coat, Omega 3 and fish oils)

1/2 cup of Merrick/Canadae kibble

Some cooked broccoli

A pinch of garlic ( tasty smell)

Some cheese

Fresh Chicken

1 cup of rice

And I add a bit of different meats every now and then. I have 12 dogs and puppies so i got to divide the meals and sometimes add a bit more ingredients if i don't add enough!! They love it and it's yummy so you could try it. All ingredients yummy and healthy.
